‘Aid mentally ill children’
KABALE-The chairperson of the association of mentally retarded children has asked their parents and caretakers to expose them to the outside world. Margret Izongoza said interaction with other people would help the children acquire skills and help from well-wishers. She was speaking at a Christmas party she organised for over 300 mentally retarded children at Kikungiri Centre for the Disabled. Izongoza condemned cultures that attribute mental retardation to witchcraft, saying it was a disability like all others.

Night prayers suspended
MBARARA
To tighten security during Christmas, security officials have suspended all night prayers. The district security chairman and resident district commissioner, Clement Kandole, said the prayers and public rallies had been identified as security threats. “We are not stopping people from praying during Christmas, but preferably they should pray during the day. We have wrong characters who may use the night prayers to terrorise our country,” he told journalists recently. He also announced that burning tyres to mark the New Year had been banned, while fireworks could only be used after obtaining Police clearance. Kandole added that all suspected trouble spots would be secured by the Police during the festivities.
