FIRE broke out on Monday afternoon, destroying 15 hectares of sugarcane belonging to Kakira Sugar Works (KSW) in Jinja district.

In a related incident, two hours later, a bush surrounding a fuel storage facility in Jinja caught fire, but the Police fire-fighting crew averted serious disaster as they acted swiftly.

KSW general manager Richard Orr said they were still auditing the losses suffered during the calamity.

The Police eastern regional marine and fire brigade chief, Olivia Wawire, could not readily establish the cause of fire in both incidents.

She, however, said perpetrators of the two infernos could have acted out of ignorance or negligence.

Wawire explained that when they visited both scenes they observed that there were gardens in the vicinity.

“We highly suspect that one of the garden owners may have attempted to burn dry weeds without realising that this is a dry season that favours fire to spread easily,” Wawire said.

She told the press that it took three hours and 45 minutes to put out the fire at both sites, adding that concerned residents alerted the fire-fighting crew.
