WILD screams filled Nagongera trading centre in Tororo district at the weekend as the Police fought hard to contain a fire that erupted from an illegal petrol store.
The fire that started from an abandoned candle left three children burnt to death and property worth millions of shilling destroyed.
The children’s mother, who sustained burns while trying to rescue her children, died from Tororo hospital hours later.
Nagongera Police post chief John Okecho described the incident as disastrous and shocking. He identified the dead as one-year-old Nantongo, Shakila Safalani and Suleiman Kasengere.
Okecho warned that the Police would take action against people selling fuel illegally.
‘It’s illegal to sell fuel from your house. The house was acting as a store for petrol and diesel,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nagongera Police have recovered a body of a woman who committed suicide after she discovered she was HIV positive.
Okecho said Topista Awora’s body was found hanging on a mango tree near her home.
“Investigation show that she had discovered that she was HIV positive,” Okecho said.
