FUFA humble at last
SIR - How times change in Ugandan football. I was pleasantly surprised to read that officials of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations organised a breakfast to meet sponsors to convince them to support the game. Not so long ago, it was the other way round, with sponsors looking for FUFA officials to give them support.
This hopefully shows that FUFA is finally being managed by officials who understand that sponsorship is a partnership. I commend the new FUFA executive for this, and for realising that they need everyone to help revive football.
If one looks at the Premiership for example, the role of sponsorship is very obvious, with all clubs associated with a certain brand. United with Vodafone, Arsenal with O2 and Emirates and Liverpool with Calsberg.
FUFA must realise that sponsorship will help run its budget, particularly television sponsorship of matches, which I am told reaps a lot of cash for the FAs in Europe.
We might yet be far from such level of sponsorship, but I am pleased we are finally on the right track.

Golf setting the pace
SIR – News that Uganda’s top golfers are turning professional is exciting.
The game over the past decades has in my view been held back by the amateurism promoted by most members at the Uganda Golf Club in Kampala. These golfers, playing off handicaps, preferred battling for trophies and TVs instead of raising competition.
This move by Charles Yokwe, Stephen Kasaija and Deo Akope, is the right one. How Sadi Onito would have loved it.
