IT was all smiles at Merryland High School, Entebbe on February 5 as teachers, students and parents converged to celebrate the performance of the school in the 2005 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.

According to last year’s UCE results, Merryland had 140 students in Division One, out of 253 students who sat for the exams.

The school, which is also marking five years of existence, has consistently proved itself an academic power-house in Wakiso district and beyond. This is despite the fact that the school admits all types of students, some of whom have had weak foundations.

Dalton Ssegawa, the school headmaster, attributed the good academic performance to God’s great mercy, dedicated teachers, highly disciplined and God-fearing students and an enabling academic environment.

Segawa also commended the students for their focus and hard work. He challenged the current S4 students to work hard to better the record.

The school offered Mohammad Maswa, the best student, a scholarship in A’ Level and sh1.2m as a token of appreciation.

Drake Mukiibi, the deputy headmaster in charge of academics, said a student from Merryland is an all-round citizen of the world due to the academic ground that has its foundation in the spiritual and holistic development.

Mukiibi said the school is located in a cool, quiet and natural environment that is conducive for learning.

Among the people who turned up during the ceremony were Lyazi Nsumba, the assistant commissioner for secondary education, Aida Lubwama, the Entebbe district education officer and alumni of the school.
