THE decision by Government to give out Shimoni Demonstration School land to a private investor casts doubts whether education is still a priority in this country.

THE decision by Government to give out Shimoni Demonstration School land to a private investor casts doubts whether education is still a priority in this country.

Shimoni is the biggest government primary school in Kampala with 3,500 pupils, mainly children of low income earners. Its strategic location in the city centre is convenient for these lower cadre staff to drop and pick their children by taxi.

The school also serves the high populated nearby areas of Kibuli and Nsambya where the children simply walk to the school.

Shifting the school to Lugogo Bypass will disrupt the learning process and make the school inaccessible to the poor parents since there are no taxis services along the bypass.

Government should rethink its decision because the move is likely to send a wrong signal that education is after all not a priority.

One wonders why the Saudi investor does not take up the land where Shimoni is to be relocated.
