UMEME has rejected Parliament’s request to be exempted from the current loadshedding rota.

In a letter to the Clerk of Parliament, Umeme’s chief customer service manager Sam Zimbe said loadshedding of the parliamentary building was inevitable because of the exceedingly dire power situation in country.

“Presently the parliamentary building is on both daytime and night loadshedding rotas. Our supplier, the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd, says there is no flexibility in the system to isolate the building from day time loadshedding,” Zimbe said.

Zimbe was responding to Ahmed Kagoye, the parliamentary Sergeant at Arms’ requesting Umeme to supply power to the parliamentary building during day and loadshed only at night.

Last week, Kagoye said Parliament spends over sh6m worth of fuel on the generator per day.
