THE Arua Gazelle’s run to Commonwealth glory was for every stride backed by passionate home support.

Kampala and several of its neighbourhoods reverberated in cheers thanks to the live digital satellite coverage.

Ugandans glued to television sets were first tense as their world champion battled toe-to-toe with Australia’s Melissa Rollison. There was however a joint sigh of relief followed by ululation as Inzikuru sped away from the home girl in the home stretch to victory.

Work came to a stand still in The New Vision newsroom as everyone urged Inzikuru on. At Arua Park, base of buses and lorries to Inzikuru’s home area West Nile, there was similar excitement.
