THE army has denied reports that the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) campaigned for President Yoweri Museveni for the elections held in February.

Spokesperson Maj. Felix Kulayigye said yesterday The Weekly Observer report alleging that CMI designed and distributed an NRM campaign manual to soldiers a week to the February 23 presidential and parliamentary elections, was ‘malicious and unfortunate.’

“This is a matter which is before Court but some newspapers have continued to malign the good name of the UPDF despite our efforts to maintain peace and security during campaigns and after elections,” he said.

The paper reported that CMI chief Col. Leopold Kyanda wrote and distributed to all intelligence officers, a four-page document outlining the achievements of the NRM.

“In that report is a document highlighting the achievements of the NRM with particular reference to the army. This was not a campaign,” he said.
He warned against ‘undermining’ the army, saying an unstable army was ‘bad for everyone.’
