UGANDA Prisons bowed out of the inaugural East African Prisons sports championships when they were eliminated by Tanzania 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the volleyball event at Kasarani stadium in Nairobi yesterday.

Uganda were two sets down before they went on to win the third but it was too late as Tanzania went ahead to wind up the game 25-5, 25-6, 20-25, 25-8.

Athletics action saw Ugandans tumble in most final events yesterday. In the women’s 5,000m, Irene Chemusto finished sixth in 17:28.7. The event was won by Commonwealth Games champion Selina Kosgei in 16:01.4 with Edith Masai finishing second.

Emmanuel Otim took eighth position in the men’s shotput with a throw of 10.74m. Kenya’s Elvis Kuya won in 11.45.

Eunice Apollo was Uganda’s potential hope in today’s women’s 400m final when she finished in second place in the heats after registering 61.3 seconds, behind Kenyan winner Elizabeth Muthoka at 55.1 seconds.

Adero Nyakkisi was fourth in the women’s 1,500m in 4:35.0 while Aggrey Igulo (11.8sec) came seventh in the men’s 100m.
