ABOUT 80 needy children in Gulu district are getting scholarships for secondary schools and tertiary institutions courtesy of their Members of Parliament (MPs).
The MP for Aswa County, Reagan Okumu, is giving scholarships to 29 students who performed well in Primary Leaving Examinations, but could not further their education due to lack of school fees. The scholarships would begin with Senior One up to the university.
“The number of children benefiting from this scheme will increase every year depending on the money I get from friends,” Okumu said recently.
Kilak County MP, Michael Nyeko Ocula is paying school fees for 29 students selected from the 29 parishes in his county for secondary education.
Nwoya County MP Simon Oyet has given 12 scholarships, 10 of which are for students in tertiary institutions.
Oyet said next year he will create a new scholarship scheme from which 40 needy children mainly orphans and disabled who perform well would benefit.
“The local leaders in the county will help me identify the beneficiaries,” Oyet said.
The MP for Gulu municipality, David Oceng Penytoo, will sponsor 10 students who performed well at A’level, but failed to join university.
Oceng said the 10 scholarships are for different students in tertiary institutions pursuing diplomas in different disciplines.
The MPs have embarked on helping the war-affected children because they lag behind in education.
