Last week’s press reports that up to 60% of girls in Kumi drop out of school to marry by the ages of 12 and 15 years should not be swept under the carpet. The district health educator says this is due to poverty and a deep-rooted culture that girls are a source of wealth. This backward culture is against Article 2 of the 1995 Uganda Constitution which outlaws bad cultural practices. Parents who marry off their underage daughters should be treated as abetting defilement and be punished.
While the Government addresses poverty, all should be sensitised on the value of educating the girl-child lest Uganda misses the Millennium Development Goal of all children completing the primary school cycle by 2015.
