THE entry list of the MTN National Championship shot up to 50 teams as registration for the two-day event set for Bugembe closed on Tuesday. The draw will be held at Bugembe this evening ahead of action tomorrow and Saturday.

According to the local athletics federation publicist Namayo Mawerere, teams start arriving for the event on Thursday ahead of the technical committee meeting which is set to make the final draw.

“We are trying to improve the organisation and also keep time. We want to avoid unnecessary delays when athletes arrive in the morning,” explained Mawerere.

The meet, which will climax with the release of the final teams for next month’s World Junior Championships in China and Africa Senior Championships in Mauritius, will see all the top three finalists walk away with cash prizes courtesy of sponsors MTN.

The top three clubs will also walk off with cash prizes and trophies.

Meanwhile, Arua district has vowed to take on defending champions Gulu in the national post-primary schools athletics championships that gets underway in Kumi today.

The West Nile athletics powerhouse have entered a big field of 51 athletes in a bid to tame Gulu’s three-year dominance in the annual championship, team coach Joel King declared yesterday.

“This time we are prepared. We are determined for a miracle. We need nothing short of the title,” King, who is also behind Mvara SSS soccer prowess, vowed on phone.

Ali Njaimoko and Fred Alioni are the Arua stars to give Gulu, Tororo and Kabale a run for their money in middle distance.

In order not to leave anything to chance, Arua was the first team to arrive in Ngora High School for acclimatisation as early as Tuesday.
