THE Government is to spend $8m (about sh14b) on eliminating accident spots on highways, writes Mariam Nalunkuuma.

Transport minister John Nasasira told the parliamentary committee on physical infrastructure chaired by Nathan Byanyima, that the programme would involve identifying and marking the black spots, re-grovelling, resealing and widening roads.

Nasasira (left) cited spots at Namanve, Lugazi, Mabira on Jinja Road, Abayita Ababiri and Nkumba on Entebbe Road and Budo on Masaka Road.

He said the project would start with Kampala-Entebbe, Kampala-Jinja and Kampala-Masaka highways.

“We have carried out a physical study on all these highways and have gathered data on spots where accidents are frequent,” Nasasira said on Thursday.

Last week, 30 people perished in a car accident at the Lugazi accident spot on Kampala-Jinja highway.

Nasasira said the ministry was disappointed by local and foreign contractors who were not performing to the ministry’s expectations.

“I do not know whether Parliament can intervene in this problem,” he said.
