About 100 vendors at Nakawa Market in Kampala are to be evicted.

This follows an eviction notice from the lawyers of First Merchant international Trading Company, ordering vendors to vacate the premises within 14 days so that they start developing the area.
First Merchant is linked to businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba.

“Our client shall be taking over possession of the same within 14 days from today,” said Nuwagaba and Mwebesa Advocates in a letter of August 24 to the market managers.

However, the vendors have petitioned the kampala town clerk to intervene, particularly on the ownership of the disputed land. The vendors operate from an open space between Metro Cash and Shell petrol station.

Meanwhile, deputy town clerk William Tumwine has summoned the market managers over the alleged lease of part of the market land.

“As far as we are concerned we are not aware about the lease.

However, I have summoned the market managers to give us information about the developments,” Tumwine said yesterday.

The market is managed by Nakawa Market cooperative Society.
