HAMZA Saleh batted with brilliance but could not help Wanderers from a painful one-run defeat to ACC on Sunday.
The victory ensured the side maintain their unbeaten run in the Castle league that comes to a climax on Sunday. ACC play archrivals Tornado at Lugogo.
Man-of-the-match Saleh (78) proved his prowess with a match-winning batting performance but finally failed to click with Wanderers needing two runs off the last ball. The ace was bowled by Ronald Semanda.
A poor batting show from African had them at one time pinned to 66-3 in 22 overs before ailing Lawrence Sematimba defied his medical bed rest advise to fire a quick 46 off 51 balls joining effort with Arthur Kyobe (26), Junior Kwebiiha (39), Kenneth Kamyuka (23) and Davis Turinawe (27) for ACC to set Wanderers 233 runs to win.
Sensible batting from top order batsman Richard Lwamafa (32 off 62) and luck by Saleh, who was dropped twice, had set the pace for Sam Walusimbi’s side that was in sight of victory until the dreadful last ball from Semanda.
With Wanderers needing 12 runs in the last over, Saleh plundered five straight shots, orchestrating a crucial 42-run partnership for the last wicket with Deus Muhumuza (17*), but lost on the last ball attempting to double step for Semanda (3/39).
The win earned ACC sh0.38m ($200) prize from cricket fanatic and Kampala businessman Raju Charania.
At Entebbe oval, half centuries from Joel Olweny (55) and Benjamin Musoke (50) were enough punishment to William Kibuka Musoke’s Tornado B that lost by eight wickets.
Action resumes Sunday with the winner between ACC and Tornado lifting the league trophy.
