The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has asked the Police and other security agencies to hunt and apprehend culprits involved in exam leakage.
The move followed reports of massive leakages of O’level and Primary Leaving Examinations.
Five people suspected to have been leaking examination papers to students in various schools have been arrested.
UNEB executive secretary Matthew Bukenya said in a statement yesterday, “There have been alarmist reports by the mass media about examination leakages. Many of our stakeholders have been alerted and everybody, including security organs, are doing whatever is possible to establish the source of the malpractice.”
“The executive secretary of UNEB assures candidates and parents and the public that everything is under control. Primary Leaving Examinations started off well this morning in all parts of the country,” the statement said.
UNEB announced on Wednesday that it was investigating the leakages. O’level examinations started on October 13 and end on November 17.
Bukenya told journalists on Wednesday, “There have been some leakages but we have a team investigating the problem.”
Sources said a top UNEB official and some examination centre coordinators in Kawempe, Wandegeya, Bwaise, Entebbe Road and Luweero were being investigated after the Police established that History and Mathematics papers were circulated a day before their sitting.
The source said at least six O’level papers had been leaked.
But Bukenya said the leakage would be confirmed after verification.
He said UNEB could not say the extent of the problem until it had collected the information. He also did not name the officials being investigated.
The sources said the leakages were widespread in central, eastern and western Uganda.
