THE Vice-President has urged the education ministry to put up low-cost projects in poor areas.

Prof. Gilbert Bukenya said, “Ministry of education is concerned for poor areas like Wakiso. Put up low cost projects so that people can benefit.”

Bukenya was speaking at the opening of Balibaseka Secondary School in Wakiso district on Wednesday.

The teachers quarters cost only sh40m.

Bukenya said a year ago, the land where the school was built was a bush.

“With this school, the place is no longer a laughing stock. That is why it was called Balibaseka, a luganda word meaning they used to laugh.”

The school was built with funds from the Bonna Bagaggawale programme, the World Islamic Call Society, Fields of Life and several local business communities.

The school, with 125 students, has two classroom blocks equipped with lockers, the teachers’ quarters and 10 latrines. Each student pays sh36,000 as fees.

The headteacher, Ruth Namaganda, said the school needs an science laboratory and sports equipment.

Bukenya said since the school is registered as government-aided, the education ministry will give it a fully equipped laboratory.

He also laid a foundation stone for dormitories whose construction he said would be completed in a month.

Present were Gerry Carron of Fields of Life, and Shaban of the World Islamic Call Society.
