THE army has instituted strict measures to curb the increasing indiscipline and criminality by the Amuka militia.

It also condemned criminal acts committed by the UPDF or auxiliary forces affiliated to it.

A statement issued on Monday by Lt. Martin Nsengiyunva, the public relations officer of the 5th division, said security agencies were instructed to arrest militias found with firearms outside their duty stations.

He said movement of armed militia was limited and anybody violating the rules would be charged.

The commanding officers were instructed to give written permission to militias moving outside the duty station.

Nsengiyunva cited three recent murder cases committed by the Amuka militia between December 6 and 20, 2004 in which seven people were killed and one injured.
In all incidents the militiamen shot civilians dead after a drinking spree.

On December 6 in Olero near Aler training camp, an Amuka shot dead three colleagues while they stealthily drank alcohol in a neighbouring village.

Another Amuka reportedly shot dead two civilians and injured another on December 20 in Dokolo Kwera sub-county.
