Lira district authorities have evicted people who encroached on wetlands in the municipality, reports James Oloch.

The eviction, which started on Monday, was supervised by the district wetlands officer, Fabius Otike and the district environment officer, Joseph Ongol.
It started from Omodo wetland that passes through six villages bordering the municipality and Anai parish.

Drainage channels opened by farmers were closed. communities turned violent and destroyed crops planted in the wetland.

Ongol said the environment statue of 1995 prohibited drainage of wetland and carrying out activities in wetlands without the approval of the National Environment Management authority.

He asked the communities to remove their crops, fences, buildings and other establishments in the wetlands before June 30.
