SUSTAINABLE national development can only be achieved with a critical mass of well-trained scientists and technologists, education minister Geraldine Bitamazire has said.
Presiding over the eighth graduation ceremony for Nkumba University on Saturday, Bitamazire said the government would prioritise sponsorship for science course in public universities.
The Chancellor, Dr. Margaret Kigozi, awarded certificates, diplomas and degrees to 736 graduates.
The number of female graduands was 393.
Bitamazire urged the university and other tertiary institutions to take into account the development of the country, when designing academic programmes.
“It is important to realise the potential of science and technology in transforming the social and economic environment of our country. Uganda must therefore have a critical mass of her own indigenous scientists and technologists, if she is to compete effectively in today’s world,” she said.
She said her ministry was reviewing the school and education curricular to ensure that science and technology courses were given priority from primary school.
“This policy is intended to produce the necessary manpower with technical and practical skills to add value to the agricultural and other commodities,” she said.
