THE European Union (EU) ambassador, Sigurd Illing, says in order to reduce dependency on donor aid, Uganda must raise domestic revenue.

Illing said domestic revenues should be raised through full expansion of trade opportunities.
“EU has since 1976 been in solid partnership with Uganda, in which we have achieved a lot together.

Working with the leadership of the Government of Uganda, we shall continue to build capacities in order to reduce dependency on donor aid,” he said.

Illing was on Monday addressing guests during the EU day celebrations at his residence in Kololo.

He said Uganda had over the years taken advantage of free access to European markets, with exports like coffee, fish, and flowers.

“Both traditional and non-traditional trade items continue to enjoy the European market. I express my firm conviction that we are on the right track,” he said.

Foreign affairs minister Sam Kuteesa said the EU 25-member cooperation was an attractive market offering great trading opportunities.

He said Uganda appreciated EU budget support in improving areas like road infrastructure and poverty eradication.
