UGANDA Athletics Federation (UAF) plans to go to the polls before the end of September. The polls will be preceded by an ordinary assembly set for Lugogo on July 31, federation president Dan Tamwesigire announced yesterday.
Tamwesigire said that the ordinary assembly will set the elections date on top of reviewing the different reports and passing the financial statement. The current executive was voted in office June 2003.
“The constitution gives us up to the end of January next year (for elections) but we want to hold the elections at least by September,” said Tamwesigire.
Tamwesigire stressed that the ordinary assembly, which will also be used to unite the different federation factions, will come a day after the 80th MTN/UAF National Athletics Championships set for July 29-30 at Namboole.
“We want to use this assembly to reconcile the different factions for the better of athletics,” said the Mbarara district education officer.
The last two years have seen the current executive strengthen junior athletics, with Boniface Kiprop and Dorcus Inzikuru going on to make a mark on the senior international scene, on top of attracting new sponsors to the sport.
Sponsors like MTN Uganda, who finance the national trials, championships and the Kampala marathon, Scandinavia Express, Buscar, and international kit manufacturers PUMA, have helped in the revival of athletics.
UAF secretary Beatrice Ayikoru confirmed that all delegates and NCS have been informed of the date.
