THE Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has urged the international community and African leaders to advocate the growing of crops used to make anti-malarial drugs.

Meeting members of the Malaria Consortium in his office at the Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, Bukenya said growing medicinal crops would lower the cost of acquiring anti-malarial drugs.

He urged Ugandans be grow artemisia, a medicinal plant used in the manufacture of anti-malarial drugs.

Drug specialist Dr. James Tibenderana said the plant was being grown in Kabale on 3,000 hectares.

Bukenya hailed the consortium for its commitment to the malaria battle.
Dr. Sunil Mehra and Dr. Graham Root said the consortium was doing studies in northern Uganda, especially among children and was researching on the treatment of tuberculosis.
