KINYARA Sugar Works (KSWL) will increase production to 93,000 tonnes of sugar annually, Jack McLean, the general manager, has said.
“We had a target of 64,008 tonnes of sugar for the crop period but we bagged 64,958 tonnes,” he said during a party.
State minister for trade and industry Nathan Nabeta presided over the success party at the company’s premises over the weekend.
Mclean said the increment was part of the next expansion plan.
“This stage is not only vital for the survival of Kinyara but will contribute towards poverty alleviation in surrounding areas because all increased cane supply will come from farmers not an increase in the nucleus estate,” he said.
Mclean said, “Kinyara’s ratio of manufactured sugar to cane crushed for the crop period was 10%. Not only is this a record for KSWL and a reflection of efficiency, it is a record for Uganda.”
He said during the past two years, Kinyara had increased production from 52,500 tonnes of sugar annually to 64,000 tonnes due to partnerships.
The board chairman, George Abwola, said, “The farmers are controlling 36% of the cane production but when we increase the tonnage to 93,000, the percentage will rise to 52%.”
