THE investigation into ghost Police officers has delayed the June salaries

THE investigation into ghost Police officers has delayed the June salaries, reports Steven Candia.

The entire Force will have to wait a little longer as fraud detectives investigate the salaries department at the Police headquarters.

Yesterday, fraud investigators returned to the salaries department and pored over documents, searching for clues and evidence over ghost officers.

Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said the new developments in the salary department had affected the release of the June salaries for both gazetted and non-gazetted officers.

Four officers and an accountant attached to the salary department were on Tuesday charged with abuse of office and causing financial loss of sh68.2m in ghost payment, following their arrest on Friday.

Mugenyi said, “We must be careful to avoid further losses in terms of payments to ghosts. Detectives are scrutinising the pay sheets which must be cleaned.”

He said investigations were a gradual and tedious process, which could not be accomplished in a day and that the June salaries would be released as soon as the ghosts were cleaned out. For long policemen were paid from a pay sheet at their respective stations and used to receive their salaries by the 28th of every month.

However, in May there was a shift with a big section of officers receiving their pay through the banks but by yesterday many officers were still wondering what had happened to their pay.
