FOLLOWING Ponsiano Lwakataka’s surge to stardom in the just concluded Moil Challenge rally, the WBS-sponsored driver has secured professional mechanics to support his Africa Rally Championship (ARC) cause next weekend.
Lwakataka, who currently leads the National Rally Championship standings with 175 points, will join home-based drivers Riyaz Kurji and Emma Katto in the hunt for glory in the Kenya Safari rally June 15-17.
“He has decided to hire professional mechanics, two from Nairobi and one from South Africa. This follows his demand for more professional people especially ahead of the Safari rally,” a reliable source within his camp disclosed.
Lwakataka, formerly serviced and prepared by Race mart at Kyambogo, has also opened his own garage to handle his mechanics work. “It’s cheaper for me and more reliable,” said Lwakataka.
Fourth place in the ARC rankings with 10 points, has also left Kurji with a mountain to climb ahead of the event.
He must win to stay in contention.
Meanwhile, the Mbarara rally due July 28 was officially launched yesterday.
