Taxi drivers and operators in Mbale town have sacked their chairman, Ahamada Magona, for allegedly extorting money from new vehicle owners seeking to be included on the route charts, writes Nathan Etengu.
Magona, who led the group since July 2004, was also accused of demanding goats and taking money from job seekers who approached him for employment as touts.
Magona and his secretary, Hatibu Pande, were sacked through a vote of no confidence at an impromptu meeting by the stage managers   and representatives of the drivers, at the Shine On Guest House on Nabuyonga Rise, Mbale municipality.
A two-page memorandum detailing Magona’s and Pande’s misdeeds was presented to Yunus Yunis, the director, S.S. Investment and Transporters, the firm managing the parks on behalf of Mbale municipal council.
Magona, who was lured to the meeting with a lie that he would meet only the directors of SS Investiments, fled the meeting when he saw the drivers and later told the office of the resident district commissioner that he had survived a beating from a mob.
