Joseph Balikuddembe Mutebi (right), the son of the late Busiro South MP Patrick Musisi, has won the by-elections for the seat.

Declaring the provisional results on Thursday at 12:22am at Wakiso district headquarters, Electoral Commission (EC) chairman Dr. Badru Kiggundu said the elections were free and fair.

Balikuddembe, 30, a city lawyer fronted by the Democratic Party (DP), got 13,036 votes which represent 53.8% of the total votes cast.

Freda Mubanda who stood on the Movement ticket came second with 6,015 votes (24.8%).

Another movement candidate and radio presenter Charles Ssenkubuge, who once attempted to contest for the presidency in 2001, was third position with 5,090 votes (21.0%).

Last was Fred Kiggundu with only 88 votes (0.4%).

The results were from 94 out of 97 polling stations.

The three polling stations on Zinga Island had not yet submitted their results.

DP spokesperson Jude Mbabali yesterday said, “The landside victory of our candidate signifies that DP is still strong.”

None of the contestants could be reached as their mobile phones were off.

DP supporters jubilated throughout the night in all the trading centres in the constituency.

Kiggundu said, “The Busiro South by-elections should be an example to other constituencies where elections are to be held.”
