WOMEN Members of Parliament have asked the Government to scrap import duty and Value Added Tax (VAT) on sanitary pads.
The female legislators said the 10% import duty and 17% VAT on sanitary pads pushed prices up, making them expensive.
Rebecca Kadaga, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, said the price of sanitary pads was beyond the reach of many women.
“These taxes need to be removed. School girls forgo classes for a week for fear of being teased by boys,†Kadaga said.
Mary Amajo, the chairperson Uganda Women Parliamentarians Association told reporters in Kampala last week that the Government had not taken the issue seriously, despite numerous requests to the Government.
