THE Multiparty National Referendum Committee (MNRC), a pro-multiparty group in the July 28 Referendum, has accused the National Resistance Movement (NRM) of hijacking the campaign for the Yes side.

“We’re reliably informed the Electoral Commi-ssion (EC) is conspiring to hijack MNRC work and keep Ugandans in the dark.

There’s an EC-NRM clique frustrating us. The EC has secretly diverted over sh10b to the NRM camp,” MNRC secretary general Mulunga Wanjala Wagobe told journalists at their headquarters in Bukoto on Tuesday.

Brandishing two badges, Wagobe accused the NRM of printing a million badges using the group’s symbol of a tree.

MNRC comprises 17 sub-committees, one of which is the NRM.

However, EC secretary general Sam Rwakoojo yesterday dismissed the allegations as unfortunate and unfounded.

“Let the Auditor General come and examine our books and, if he finds there’s a single coin used outside the budget, I’ll stand to be accountable,” he said on phone.

Rwakoojo said the EC was working with both sides and conducting a multi-media civic education, with the assistance of various NGOs.

MNRC mobilisation secretary Stella Nambuya said they were also informed that the NRM was facilitating the No side.

“The NRM is using the exercise to promote kisanja (unlimited presidential term limits). The voters are now confused. They don’t know what to vote for,” she said.
