Being smooth, straight and often slippery, the stretch of tarmac road at Mabira Forest, on the Kampala-Jinja highway has become one of the most accident-prone spots.
Hardly a month passes without an accident on this road. And most of the accidents are caused by speeding and overtaking of vehicles, especially heavy trucks.

Some of the worst accidents
July 17, 2005: Police attributed the Kaako’s accident to speeding and reckless overtaking by the driver of the deceased’s car.

Feb 14, 2005: Forty-two people burn to death after a mini-bus, a fuel tanker and a Suzuki car collide at Lwankima in Mabira Forest at 7.00pm.

June 4, 2004: Three pilgrims perished and 40 others were injured when the truck they were travelling in fell in a ditch.
Sept 27, 2004: Six people died at Kitega, Lugazi after their taxi heading to Kampala collided head-on with a Fuso truck heading to Jinja.

Dec 10, 2003: Eight people die and 13 are seriously injured in an accident involving more than three vehicles including a taxi, Fuso truck and a Mercedes Benz trailer.
Oct 2, 2003: Three people died at Namagunga when a Mitsubishi truck from Kenya rammed into a commuter taxi. The taxi caught fire shortly after the victims’ bodies were retrieved and survivors rescued.

Aug 13, 2003: Family of seven people returning from burying a foetus in Bugiri perished after their double-cabin pick-up collided head-on with a Fuso truck at Bulyantente around 7:30pm.

Aug 13, 2001: Four sports journalists: Kenneth Matovu, Simon Peter Ekarot, Leo Kabunga (both of The New Vision) and Francis Batte of The Monitor, died when their saloon car collided with a pick-up truck near Lugazi town.

Jan 31, 1999: A British couple and their son perished after their vehicle crashed into another vehicle driven by rally fans.
