KHARTOUM, Wednesday - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir yesterday announced the launch of a committee to probe the death of former southern rebel leader John Garang.

KHARTOUM, Wednesday - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir yesterday announced the launch of a committee to probe the death of former southern rebel leader John Garang.

Bashir spoke of “the formation of a national commission with the cooperation of the SPLM to investigate the helicopter crash that cost Garang his life,” in a speech broadcast on public television.

Garang, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, was killed in helicopter crash on Saturday that many of his supporters say was not an accident.

The UN representative in Khartoum said an investigation should be undertaken, although he insisted the crash had been an accident. “The investigation is necessary. We can assist in any way. I have offered the assistance,” Jan Pronk told reporters, adding that there was no reason for suspicion.
