The Broadcasting Council (BC) yesterday met the management of KFM over Thursday’s closure of the radio

The Broadcasting Council (BC) yesterday met the management of KFM over Thursday’s closure of the radio, report Anne Mugisa and Herbert Ssempogo.

The Secretary to the BC, Dr. Okullu Mura, said yesterday as he went in for the meeting at around 11:30am that the Monitor sought to meet the council.

The Monitor group was led by managing director The Monitor Publications, Conrad Nkutu, who said he could not comment and asked the reporter to call him later.

The BC closed the station indefinitely saying it breached sections of the electronic media law. It said the programme “Andrew Mwenda Live” of Wednesday aired between 7:00 and 8:00pm offended the minimum broadcasting standards enshrined in the first schedule of the Electronic Media Cap 104/2000.

The mood in the radio newsroom was sombre as reporters discussed their fate. Mwenda, whose comments prompted the closure, paced in his office.

However, business at the newspaper was normal. Deputy Police chief Julius Odwee said they had received a letter of the closure but had not been involved further.
