THE Commonwealth has designed a new life skills syllabus called Lifesaver International Course.
Speaking at the end of a First Aid training course at Kibuli Police Training School recently, international observer Annie Hartley said the new syllabus would address deficiencies in the old one.
Hartley, from South Africa’s Kwa Zulu Natal University, said the new syllabus focused on modern methods of treatment, prevention and management of accident victims.
She said the syllabus, being pre-tested in Uganda, would also be tried out in Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The five-day event, organised by Prior of South Africa, was conducted by St John’s Ambulance. The 17 participants, including six Police personnel, demonstrated their newly-acquired skills in evacuating a ‘casualty’.
St John’s Ambulance executive secretary Christine Kasirye said the syllabus also targeted infectious diseases such as ebola, malaria and HIV/AIDS.
Trainer Isaac Mutebi said the course focused on the environment, safe transportation and evacuation methods, while discouraging self-medication.
Mayor Sebaana Kizito said the course was timely and essential.
