THE Government is to start a policy that requires all managers of public enterprises to be paid according to their performance.
Privatisation state minister Prof. Peter Kasenene yesterday said even promotions for managers would be based on their performance, adding that they would have to sign Performance agreements with their employers.
He was officiating at a workshop for heads of government institutions and agencies at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
Kasenene said managers and directors of companies should wake up to the realities of the challenges of competitiveness, productivity and sustainability that result from globalisation.
Vincent Kaheeru, the chief executive officer at the Institute of Corporate Governance, which organised the workshop, said any organisation’s success depended on the performance of its directors.
“As the boards’ activities are made increasingly transparent under national and international law, there is an urgent need for transformation in the way directors’ competence is developed,” he said.
He urged directors to ensure that institutions do not just survive but thrive through good governance.
