WORLD 3000m steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru failed in her attempt to break the world record in Riet, Italy on Sunday night.

The 23-year-old Arua Gazelle ran a season second best time of 9 minutes 16.47 seconds in the last IAAF Grand Prix race of the summer. This however remains 15 seconds outside the world record of 9:01.59 set by 27-year-old Russian Gulnara Samitova last year.

“It was a very good race. This win was important for my country,” Inzikuru said after the Riet race.

In a re-match of the world championships final in Helsinki, Russia’s Yekaterina Volkova finished second with 9:29.94 over Jamaica’s Korene Hinds (9:30.12).
The Ugandan track queen gets one more go at the world record next week when she joins Boniface Kiprop (10000m) at the IAAF World Athletics Final in Monaco.

Inzikuru’s Riet performance bettered Samitova’s meet record of 9:21.40 set last September.

Also expected to make an assault on a world record next week is Kenyan-born Qatari Saif Saaeed Shaheen, who like Inzikuru, is coached by Italian Renato Canova.
