THE changing lifestyle among Ugandans is responsible for the increasing number of heart problems, the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) has noted.
“The lifestyle has changed a lot today. Many people prefer to eat fast foods with a lot of drugs and oils, which was not the case in the past.
“Our fore fathers used to exercise a lot. But today, many sit in offices throughout the day thereby becoming vulnerable to heart diseases,” Dr. John Omagino, the institute’s deputy director, said on Monday.
Omagino, also a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Mulago hospital, said increased awareness and improved diagnosis had helped to highlight heart problems.
“Previously, many people would not know whether someone had died of a heart disease or not. But today, even rural folk come to us when their children get breathing problems,” he said.
He called for a joint effort to raise funds if Uganda is to get facilities to carry out open-heart operations.
