SIR — the President of Tanzania, Mr. Benjamin Mkapa is an intellectually rare breed of African statesman.
SIR — the President of Tanzania, Mr. Benjamin Mkapa is an intellectually rare breed of African statesman.
He must be admired and emulated for coming to say farewell to us as a gesture of good neighbourliness. His eloquence, wisdom and prudence delighted many people in Uganda including the media and some politicians. His message was loud and clear for those who had ears to hear.
But he should not have suggested that like Tanzania, we should groom our future leadership. In a democracy, which is partisan and divisive, grooming creates and excludes members from other parties so much that it becomes political nepotism, which always favours the ruling party.
Africa has not yet reached collaborative politics. We are still on confrontational, oppositional and divisive politics!
