Arua district council has honoured golden girl Dorcus Inzikuru by renaming Barifa stadium after her. They have also given her sh5m for bringing pride to West Nile.

A motion to this effect was moved by Arua district secretary for education Leone Candia at a special council meeting last week.

The councillors also resolved to erect two statues of the Arua Gazelle, who surprised the world by winning the first women’s 3000m steeplechase title.

The council also honoured her Italian promoter Flavio Pasqualato and local coach Sam Egama for spotting her. They will both receive special Arua certificates.

Arua is planning a special welcome for Inzikuru (right) when she returns later this week.

Arua deputy speaker Gloria Opinia, who chaired the session, said Inzikuru showed the fruits of gender balance in the country.

She expressed disappointment that most district secretaries, including the secretary for gender, were absent when the motion was tabled and discussed.

The councillors said money should be secured from the central government to refurbish Inzikuru stadium.
