NATIONAL league champions Falcons and 2004 women’s runners-up MUK-Sparks leave the country today to grace the Great Lakes basketball tournament in Bujumbura, Burundi over the weekend.

Organised by the Association of Burundi Basketball (ACBAB), the three-day event featuring teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Rwanda and hosts Burundi, is expected to run from September 30 to October 2.

Falcons and Sparks, who were faced with crucial ties against Sadolin Power and Lady Bucks in the MTN basketball league at the weekend, have requested local body FUBA to postpone their games.

“It is the first time my team travels to Burundi for a basketball event but with the challenges of Kenyan teams, we are determined to return to Kampala with the title,” Sparks assistant captain Margaret Nalubega said.

Falcons will be hoping to erase a 103-83 defeat they suffered against Rwanda’s APR during the finals of the Falcons Invitational tournament in July.

Falcons had earlier also endured an 89-75 loss to Burundi’s New Star during the preliminary stages of the tournament.
