ELECTION of village and district leaders for the Forum for Democratic change’s (FDC) national delegates’ conference started in Kampala on Saturday.

The conference on October 28 will nominate the party’s presidential candidate and elect the party’s national executive committee.

The elections in Nakawa Division were low-key, with Luzira parish registering a turn up of 12 party members. Other parish level elections were held in Naguru II parish, Butabika, Bukoto I and Bukoto II villages.

There were no prominent FDC members elected in any of the parishes. The elections coordinator for Nakawa Division, Juma Nsi-Erikomawa, blamed the low turn-up on poor communication.

“This thing was done hastily, we gave members short notice, not many got information about the election but we have a lot of support in this area,” Nsi-Erikomawa said. He said FDC had 6,000 registered voters in Nakawa.

He said election coordinators were under pressure to organise elections to beat the deadline for the delegates’ conference.

FDC headquarters last week dispatched a team of zonal coordinators to organise and conduct the elections from village to district level ahead of its first ever delegates’ conference in October.

The party’s acting chairperson, Salaamu musumba (above), said at least 1,000 delegates shall attend the conference.

“Apart from the members, we shall also invite people who will add value to our Party. We are talking about elders and the party shall duly meet to decide whom to invite,” she said.
