KAKIRA Sugar Works will invest $45m (about sh81.4b) in an expansion programme to install machinery for doubling production and generation of power for sale, the general manager has said.

During an interview at the company’s plant in Jinja, Richard Orr said they hope to finish the installations by late 2006 and the first half of 2007.

“We are putting up a new Milling Tandem to double the sugarcane-crushing capacity. This mill requires auxiliary equipment like cane carriers, cane loading and unloading machines, which are being installed and will be commissioned by the middle of 2006 to enable production begin in early 2007. We expect output to double from 300 to 600 tonnes of sugar daily,” Orr said.
He said they would install two bigger boilers.
