Emmanuel cardinal Wamala has cautioned politicians against violence, torture, discrimination and threats during campaigns.

In a Christmas message at Rubaga cathedral on Sunday, Wamala said such acts had been witnessed in the parties’ primaries and were most likely to resurface.

“If a football match has been characterised by ettemu (foul play), players and spectators will not be happy with one another after the match. But if it has been fair, the two teams will be happy even when one has lost,” he added.

Quoting Isaiah 52:7, Wamala said Uganda needed more messengers of peace like Jesus Christ who came with peace. He asked leaders to toil for peace.

“If we talk peace, everyone will look at the other as a messenger of peace. The birth of Jesus is the basis of peace in our families and in the country,” Wamala said.

Present were Vice-president Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, Parliament speaker Edward Ssekandi and DP presidential candidate Ssebaana Kizito.

Wamala commended the Katikkiro, Joseph Ssemwogerere, for retiring honourably.

He condemned paganism and theft, saying they were due to people’s failure to accept Jesus Christ.

Bukenya cautioned the public against opportunists in the opposition who take advantage of the poor people and hoodwink them.
