PEACE will return only if the government grants federo, Buganda’s Katikkiro (premier), Joseph Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere has said.
He urged all regions to join Buganda in the fight to regain federal status in place of the government-backed regional tier system.
“When Uganda was still a federal state, all regions enjoyed peace. We (Buganda) will not tire until the government grants it to settle the current unrest,” he said.
He said all regions had kings and respected their traditions. He said all past achievements were now crumbling.
Ssemwogerere was receiving files of Mengo government properties at Mukono district headquarters on Thursday, shortly before he resigned as premier. His resignation has yet to be accepted by the Kabaka.
He hailed Mukono district chairman Godfrey Ddamulira for following Kiboga and Wakiso districts in giving Buganda its properties.
“Districts that are still possessing Mengo properties are doing so illegally and should hand them over before being pushed,” he said.
He said a Buganda Land Board (BLB) committee had been formed to ensure the kingdom land is given back.
Ddamulira said a committee had been set up to foresee the return of Mengo’s properties, especially land, still in possession of individuals.
“We have, in principal, handed over all properties to Mengo. We, with immediate effect, cease exercising control over them,” he said.
He said buildings that were now in a sorry state, would be renovated before being handed over to the kingdom.
“Our new administration block is still under construction. we will continue hiring the buildings that are currently housing us,” he said.
He said he would continue supporting Mengo’s struggle to get federo and recover all its properties from the government.
