LDUs shot dead a man and a child over a stolen goat in Nyakiyumbu sub-county, Kasese district on Friday.
Five other residents were injured in the scuffle that broke out after the LDUs shot Gideon Muhindo and the unidentified child.
Kibarara village LCs said the LDUs shot Muhindo on suspicion he was carrying a stolen goat on the Bwera-Kasese road on Friday evening.
Residents said Muhindo had bought the goat from thieves.
They said stray bullets hit the child and a boda-boda motorcyclist.
Some residents said Muhindo had hired the motorcycle to take the goat to the LCs but was shot dead on the way.
The child died later at Bwera Hospital, where the motorcyclist was also admitted.
Residents mounted a hunt for the suspected LDUs.
The district CID chief, Musa Kirenzi, said Police had been deployed to block residents from lynching the suspected killers.
Kirenzi said the Police had arrested the LDU who was suspected to have shot Muhindo.
He warned residents against mob justice.
