Avoid sacrificing chimpanzees

Feb 02, 2004

Editor – I have just learnt of plans by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to transfer three chimpanzees from Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary to the Changsa Zoological Gardens in Hunan Province, China, as a goodwill gesture to China from Uganda.

Ngamba Island, founded by Jane Goodall, is a premier sanctuary while Changsa Zoological Gardens is reported to be in deplorable condition. These animals ought not to be sacrificed for goodwill, and this action would violate international wildlife regulations prohibiting export of endangered species.
I urge UWA to abandon this ill-conceived plan.
