Is UPC’s Mayega really sincere?

SIR— Henry Mayega, the vice-chairman of the UPC presidential policy commission, was quoted in the press as saying, “Ugandans need a government that treasures human life... and that government would be a UPC one” (The New Vision, April 1). Being Fools’ Day, I first thought Mayega, in conjunction with Milton Olupot (the reporter) were fooling the nation.

But alas!

The story ended without any clue that it was a Fools’ Day gimmick! I wish to know from Mayega: Is it not the same UPC that devoured the people it was supposed to protect in Luweero in the 80s? How many elections were held under UPC in its two tenures of office?

Does Mayega know a gentleman by the name of Chris Rwakasisi (now in Luzira Maximum Security Prison)?

Wasn’t he among the UPC pillars who killed Ugandans with impunity! What respect for rights was UPC championing when it attacked the Kabaka in the palace?
