Oh Makerere University!

THE saga at Makerere University continued throughout last week. Perhaps taking their cue from the students, the lecturers have been on strike. Makerere students have learnt that unless they throw a tantrum, destroy property, loot canteens and wreak havoc on Wandegeya, no one will listen to them.
This has led to the treating of the symptoms rather than the causes of strife at the university. For even though some of their needs are met, nobody listens to the students. Same thing with the lecturers. In a place that has some of Uganda’s best brains, there is chaos. People are not listening to each other.
Something is seriously wrong at Makerere. Why should the president have to step in to solve the problem? Will state house treat the cause or the symptoms? Before any step is taken, there is need to tackle Makerere’s problems from the root. Pruning a few branches here and there is obviously not working if the roots are diseased. One almost weeps for Makerere and can only sadly exclaim: “Oh Makerere!”
