THE Dairy Development Authority (DDA) plans to organise Karamoja pastoralists to produce milk for sale on the local and international market, an official has said.

DDA’s regulatory services manager Robert Walimbwa said Karamoja had potential to become the biggest milk producer in the country.

Speaking at his office at Crusader House on Friday, Walimbwa said commercialisation of milk from Karamoja was on top on DDA’s activities this year.

He said DDA would use local governments, traditional leaders and non- governmental organisations to train and sensitise the Karimojong about milk handling and processing.

Walimbwa said providing alternative sources of food and water to the Karimojong would help them spare milk for trade.

“We are sourcing for funding from various donors so that we can enter Karamoja and organise the people for commercial milk production,” he said.

Walimbwa said DDA also plans to re-open the milk processing plant in Mbale, which had closed down due to insurgency.

Walimbwa said the plant in Mbale would process milk produced in eastern Uganda and Karamoja.

Shilling appreciates
By Macrines Nyapendi

The shilling recorded new high trading levels last week against major currencies in the local foreign exchange market as dealers hoped for the central bank’s intervention to restore calm.

The dealers said low demand for the dollar and huge inflows for the foreign currencies led to this.

This caused panic in the market and positioned the shilling at 1,820/1,870 against the dollar, and 3,100/3,300 and 2,070/2,300 against the pound sterling and euro.

One dealer said, “The local forex market is very small to accommodate over $20m in only a month. We do not think the central bank can intervene and buy out all this money.”
